The application

The session reads its settings from the environment, so you set them on the start line.

The profile liveson the volume

Accounts, local folders, keys and settings are all in one directory, and that directory persists.

It comes back signed in

The profile carries the accounts and whatever was downloaded. A restart resumes rather than reconfigures.

The ESR line

Void ships the conservative release. Features arrive here later than upstream, and so do the surprises.

Mail at rest, on a disk you own

Local folders and OpenPGP keys sit on the volume unencrypted. Protect the session accordingly.

Thunderbird arrives as one image. This is what comes down the first time, and what the disk should have free for it.
